Reclaim the Streets
Not quite a club, venues vary, but there's always music
& dancing. The last one (6/6/98) started well at Euston, moved on to
Kings Cross, looking for the party. The drumming ensemble, de facto leaders,
disappeared into the tube - obviously the station could not cope with
this size of crowd - then came out again, with slightly less authority.
Most of the crowd followed them up Caledonian Road, then the drummers
went for a train, which split the crowd further. Word was that the
party was at Seven Sisters, a long way to walk. I felt we should keep
to the streets, closing the A1 for a while, and to a lesser extent,
the whole route to Seven Sisters. Inevitably there was trouble with
motorists, no real violence, but it was shocking to see the aggressive
contempt that many of them felt for us, like Nazis towards Jews.
Anyway, I arrived at the party abouut 4.30, relieved to be part of
the crowd again. The sense of power and togetherness that existed
at the start had been lost along the various routes, but it was a
good party -"carnival of the dispossesed", as it says in the banner.
